Introduction
My research and teaching interests are (and have been) focused on the social construction of new (electronic/digital) media, with specific reference to the various ways in which society is implicated in media use. Until recently, my primary object of study has been the media worker: the practitioner working professionally in or for media organizations. As a former reporter I have taken journalism as a particular case study, whereas later on I included the advertising, computer and video games, motion picture and television industries in my analyses. Currently, my work focuses more broadly on the relationships between (new) media and social theory. A related interest focuses on media and subcultures, with specific projects regarding the history and culture of so-called “extreme” metal music.

Remark: during the Spring of 2008 I made the decision to support open access publishing and self-archiving more deliberately, rather than keep on sending work to closed journals operated by corporate-controlled publishers. One of the ways I can do this (beyond joining editorial boards of such journals and acting as a reviewer of their manuscripts), is to submit my work for peer review much more frequently to open access peer-reviewed journals. I am doing this because open access publishing is an important and exciting new way of getting taxpayer-funded research and knowledge out in the open, making our work as academics more inclusive and transparent, and contributing to a viable additional platform for research dissemination.
